Clicker Training Review

The Secret to Becoming a Super Trainer

I was walking my dog Rigby off leash a couple of months ago, and he started playing with another group of three dogs, two Labrador Retrievers and a Border Collie. Rigby is a water lover, and I mean big time, as were the other dogs, the only trouble was, their owner didn’t want them to swim…. You can imagine what happened, everyone was soon in the canal having a ball!

Anyway, their owner was calling them out unsuccessfully and when they finally came to him, to my horror… they got a flogging with their leash, after that the two retrievers avoided their master like the plague, and who would blame them. Rigby on the other hand came and sat beside me. At the time he was about 7 months old, (that’s him in the banner at 2 months) so what was the difference?

We had been using clicker training by then for about 2 months and though far from perfect, Rigby’s understanding of our instructions was very clear and he knew that if he responded correctly, he would benefit. We still see the Retrievers occasionally and their owner, tragically still doesn’t comprehend!

Our introduction to Clicker Training came from ‘The 4 Secrets of Becoming a Supertrainer’ which has finally been translated into English. The Scandinavians have benefited from the skills of the authors for many years, but not the rest of the world, until now.

This extraordinary book is the best and most authoritative guide to Clicker Training in the world. Now that is a big claim, so let me back it up:

1. It is mandatory reading for Guide Dog for the Blind Instructors in California

2. The techniques are used for training Search & Rescue Dogs and Military Patrol Dogs

3. Clicker Training is employed extensively in training Marine Mammals

4. Many Professional Dog Trainers now use it for Corrective Behavior Training

If you think that means this book is only for professional trainers, you will be seriously wrong. It is great for anyone who would love to own a well trained dog, one that is the envy of other dog owners.

It is well laid out, instructions are simple to understand and you will quickly pick up the natural progression of the training techniques. Even the experienced trainer will find this book offers a wide variety of ideas they can introduce into their regimes.

If you have a dog, cat, horse or any other animal that will respond to training, you will be amazed how you can adapt the instructions to your own training challenge and end up with amazing success.
